Important notice
This page is general orientation only. Laws, thresholds, and IRIS screens change. For binding decisions use the live FBR website and IRIS, or a qualified tax professional in Pakistan.

Quick glossary

Short definitions so the rest of the page reads clearly — align with FBR’s own FAQ PDF for login and NTN details.

FBR
Federal Board of Revenue — federal tax administration in Pakistan.
IRIS
Digital system for profiles, registration tasks, and many tax filings at iris.fbr.gov.pk.
NTN
National Tax Number; your taxpayer identifier (login rules vary by entity — see FBR FAQs).
AOP
Association of Persons (e.g. partnership) — different document set than a sole business.
SECP
Where companies are incorporated before you mirror details on FBR.

Step-by-step registration

Follow in order. Exact IRIS labels change when FBR updates the portal — the IRIS Dashboard Manual below shows the live menu structure.

Create access to IRIS

Open the FBR IRIS portal and register for login if needed. Use a strong password and an email or mobile you control for OTP and notices. For company flows, the person signing up should be authorised (director or nominee).

Complete taxpayer profile

After login, complete your profile: identity, address, business category (individual, AOP, company). Upload scans in the formats and sizes IRIS requests; keep originals.

Apply for or activate NTN

Use the registration area in IRIS to apply for NTN or link an existing record. Pick the correct category. Companies: incorporate with SECP first, then match SECP particulars exactly.

Save acknowledgements and note your NTN when issued.

Sales tax / further registrations (if applicable)

Depending on activity and law, you may register for sales tax or other heads. Confirm eligibility on FBR or with a qualified adviser — do not rely on informal advice alone.

After registration: compliance basics

File returns by due dates shown for your category, update profile when address, bank, or structure changes, and use only official FBR channels for payments.

Required documents (overview)

What IRIS asks for depends on your category. Use this table to gather paperwork; the downloadable companion repeats this with more detail.
